Buckfast Abbey (R17)

On the way back from the three reservoirs we stopped at Buckfast Abbey.  It seemed so peaceful!

Drizzlecombe (R8)

We parked by the Scout Hut at Nattor, which seemed to have been taken over by the army.  We walked through Scout Hut grounds on the bridle way, with army recruits being told how to put tents up.  We continued on Edward's Path and came to Ditsworthy Warren house.  As we had been there before we continued on the path at the back of the house towards Drizzlecombe.  Before long we could see two mehirs, but we had a problem getting across the boggy land to them.  We came to a smaller one before we eventually we found a way around the bog and jumped across a stream to get  to the mehirs.  The first mehir had a very distinct stone row leading from it and at the other end was the Drizzlecombe stone.  Both were very tall. The Giant's Basin at the side of the Drizzlecombe stone was very obvious. Dark clouds had come overhead so having seen these mehirs we quickly returned to our car, following a better path on the way back...

River Plym at Cadover Bridge - T6

Reading through "Dartmoor 365" by John Hayward I was surprised there is no entry for square T6. There is certainly plenty to see here.  The river Plym flows through this part of Dartmoor.  At Cadover Bridge it is wide and shallow making it a popular, safe place for children to play. You can walk along the bank of the river and very quickly it looks all together different.  The river runs faster as it tumbles over granite rocks, roaring as it goes.

Shaugh Prior, Shaugh Bridge, Dewerstone - U5, T4, T5

I parked at Shaugh Bridge, a place I had visited many times before.  I have posted photos of this beauty spot earlier (25.6.17).  Today I walked up the River Plym to the base of the Dewerstone.  I had never done this before.  The climb up from the river was not too bad and it was cool under the trees with the sound of the river running nearby.  Unfortunately because the trees were in full leaf you could not see the Dewerstone clearly, but there were glimpses of the rocks towering overhead. On the way home I stopped in Shaugh Prior.  I saw a cross just below the Community Centre and I assumed this was the one mentioned in the book. I must read the book more carefully in future!  It was only as I was driving away from the village that I noticed the cross at the road junction, but there was nowhere to park to photograph that one.   However, because I stopped at the Community Centre I was able to see the far reaching view from this sp...
