South Brent (V15) and Lydia Bridge (V14)

We only had a short morning for walking today, but the sun was shining so we wanted to make the most of it.  We drove to South Brent and after a cup of coffee and cake in a very nice tea shop explored the village.  We found all the items in D365 book, although the Achor Inn is no longer there.

The church was quite large.  It had several blocked off doors, but I eventually found the small one mentioned in the book.  I looked inside the church but could not see the sundial.



Many of the houses in the centre of the village were obviously once shops.  In particular I noticed the old  candlemaker premises.


After walking around the village we took the footpath down the side of the river to Lydia Bridge.  This was a pleasant short walk.

The weather has been so wet, with rain and snow, that Dartmoor is sodden and we thought we had best walk on defined paths.  We parked just outside Hexworthy and walked down the road that led to Swincombe Reservoir.  The path was fine but we could not venture off the path as the ground was so wet and marshy. As we walked down we missed the entrance to Gobbett Mine, although we saw it on the way back.  We could also see the ruins of mine buildings, but we did not see the various stones as it was too wet to go exploring off the path. We walked on to the bridge the led to John Bishop's house.  We were able to follow a path to the bridge but the other side was to boggy to be able to get close to ruins.  Referring to "An hours stroll on Dartmoor" by John Hayward we learnt that this bridge is called Fairy Bridge. Little Trowlesworthy Tor (T7)

We had attempted to find the granite flagpole base on Little Trowlesworthy Tor before but had not been successful.  We decided to try again.  We were following the walk in Off The Beaten Track.  We parked at Blackabrook Bridge and walked up to Trowlesworthy Farm.  Having walked around it we headed up to Great Trowlesworthy Tor and started to look for the flagpole base.  To begin with we could not find it , but when we walked on further we came to another tor and there was flagpole base. As we walked back down to Trowlesworthy Farm we came to a vermin trap, but the lid in the middle was missing.

Sherwell (M13), Rowbrook (O14) and Higher Uppacott (O15)

We drove to Sherwell and saw Sherwell Farm, Hornets Castle and another thatched cottage that we assumed was Rogues Roost, although we could not see any sign to confirm that. From Sherwell we drove on to the car park at the foot of Bel Tor and walked down the lane to Rowbrook Farm.   Longhouse at Rowbrook Farm We then drove on to Higher Uppacott and parked and walked around this long house.  We were not able to see inside, but the outside looks well preserved.
