Merripit Hill (J12)

It was a beautiful sunny late October day so we had to make the most of it and go walking on Dartmoor.  We parked in a car park just passed Postbridge and walked up the track to Merripit Hill.  It was a gentle climb but after a while the track turned into a stream.  We were able to find a path through the heather that kept parallel to the stream and came back to the track before reaching the top of the hill.  This would surely be a lovely place to visit when the heather is out.

We did not see any of the pigs mentioned in D365, the only animals were sheep and ponies.






I have not been able to find out what the remains of the builder were that the horses were feeding around.  We could see Fernworthy Forest in the distance, but we wanted to go on to another walk so we turned around.  It made a very nice short walk.

We had attempted to find the granite flagpole base on Little Trowlesworthy Tor before but had not been successful.  We decided to try again.  We were following the walk in Off The Beaten Track.  We parked at Blackabrook Bridge and walked up to Trowlesworthy Farm.  Having walked around it we headed up to Great Trowlesworthy Tor and started to look for the flagpole base.  To begin with we could not find it , but when we walked on further we came to another tor and there was flagpole base. As we walked back down to Trowlesworthy Farm we came to a vermin trap, but the lid in the middle was missing.

Black Dunghill (L7)

We parked at Holming Beam and walked along the path until it turned off.  We continued on a track which went through a lot of marshy ground.  After a while realised we needed to be on the other side of the barbed wire fence so we retraced our steps to the main path and then went over a stile and found a definite path, even though it was grassy and not very wide. As we walked along we saw little clumps of different heathers.  We could not see any yellow deer grass although there were some plants that could have been deer grass that had finished flowering, We passed through the gate at the bottom of Black Dunghill. the land then became very wet and marshy.  There did not seem to be many flowers on the slopes of the hill, so we decided to turn around.  We had reached Black Dunghill although we did not reach its summit.

Sheepstor (R6)

When we drove to Sheepstor before there was nowhere to park so we could not get out and explore the churchyard and find the things mentioned in D365.  Having walked to Drizzlecomb this morning we drove home via Sheepstor.  This time we found somewhere to leave the car and walked to the church. The cross outside the lynch gate We found the unusual carving above the church porch and the tomb of White Rajahs of Sarawak. This had three parts that seemed were of different ages, all of which had inscriptons.
